The Difference Between a Dedicated and Shared IP Address

Do you have a shared IP address for your website? You may want to switch over to a dedicated IP instead. What exactly is a dedicated IP, and why do you need one?

When you open a shared web hosting account you will receive a shared IP address such as , 125.78.6.30. It's called a shared IP because your site is actually is actually 'sharing" this IP address with dozens of other domains. Conversely, with an Ipower dedicated IP address your site will be given a unique IP address that will be associated with your domain only.

* A dedicated IP address is a requirement for SSL certification if you are a small business running an eCommerce site. It also lets prospective customer know you are serious and professional

* A dedicated IP will help speed up the downloading up your site for your readers.

* On a shared IP address, the search engines may end up penalizing or blacklisting YOU if someone using your shared address spams them. Why take the chance of getting your site banned or penalized by Google for something you had nothing to do with? The bottom line here is you won't have that problem with your own dedicated IP, unless of course you're the spammer!

* Many Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts feel that using a dedicated IP will increase your web site rankings (SERPs).

Overall, most web hosting companies offer the dedicated IP option. I switched over from a shared IP to a dedicated one because for me, the potential benefits far outweighed the cost of a few extra pennies per month.
